The Case for Nutritional Supplementation
If you’re not taking vitamins but wondering if you should, or if you’re unsure of the effectiveness of what you are taking, this post is for you. Here’s why.
  • Most people are not getting optimal amounts of vitamins, minerals, and phytonutrients in their food.  With the depletion of our soils, the dearth of organic produce in most grocery stores, and the constant lure of processed foods, even the most diligent consumers are hard pressed to get all the nutrients they need.
  • Most of us are absorbing toxins from the environment, foods, and water. Sadly, this is now unavoidable; from PFAS to pesticides, eating completely clean is impossible unless you are on a farm growing plants and animals on fully restored soil using all organic feed and fertilizer.  Who’s doing that?
  • We are living through unusually stressful times. Emotional and psychological stress depletes our ability to manage environmental pressures, get enough sleep, avoid illness, and have the energy to do healthy things like exercise.
Nutritional supplements do just that. They supplement the nutrients we should, but don’t, get enough of from food, and they help us manage toxins, stress, and other health challenges. To thrive in our time, nutritional supplements are helpful for everyone, and necessary for some.
Why Thorne?
How do you know what’s really in a multivitamin?  Does the label honestly report the ingredients, and in the stated dose? Are there extra things in it that your body doesn’t need or want? Are the ingredients responsibly sourced and thoroughly tested?  What about other supplements you might be tempted by--is there solid science behind their claimed benefits?  Do you worry about potential negative interactions with your medications? Are you confused and overwhelmed by the shelves and shelves of products in your local health-food store or pharmacy? What are they all for???
Dietary supplements are not regulated in the U.S. the way food and prescription drugs are, so the only way to have confidence in a product is to closely examine the company and its processes and how it governs itself. Which is what we did when we became aware of Thorne.  Here’s what we found.
  • It is transparent: about ingredients, manufacturing processes, and sourcing.
  • It is grounded in clinical research. It partners with major academic and medical institutions like the Mayo Clinic, Johns Hopkins University, and the National Institutes of Health to investigate how substances work in the body, and grounds its products in the science.
  • It tests extensively and is third-party certified. Every supplement goes through four rounds of testing, from the raw materials stage to the final product.  Elite and professional athletes depend on Thorne to deliver clean products that will pass testing for banned ingredients.
  • It is committed to sustainability, both in sourcing and in packaging.
  • It is committed to education. Its Web site is a wellspring of the most current information about every aspect of health, fitness, and longevity.
It’s understandable and reasonable to be skeptical about the supplement industry because there is so much hucksterism out there. (This is true of the fitness industry in general.) But there are reputable, responsible people and companies doing the right thing for the right reasons, armed with the best information available.  Thorne is one.  Team Fitness is one.
